Six players, including Memorial Tournament winner William McGirt, have been added to the field for this week's US Open at Oakmont, organisers have announced.

The United States Golf Association had kept open the spaces for any additional players to earn exemption by moving into the top 60 of the world rankings.

McGirt, ranked 45, was the only player to meet that criteria after his maiden PGA Tour triumph at Muirfield Village earlier this month. The 36-year-old, who has three other top-10 finishes this year, will play in his first US Open when the tournament gets under way in Pittsburgh on Thursday.

The other five spaces, completing a 156-man field for year's second major, were awarded to alternates from sectional qualifiying - Americans Zach Edmondson, Tony Finau, Kevin Foley, Daniel Summerhays and Mike van Sickle.
