Miguel Angel Jimenez soared four shots clear at the top of the Senior Open leaderboard with a seven-under-par 65 in the third round at Carnoustie.

The cigar-smoking Spaniard's round was the best of the day by three strokes as he raced to 11 under for the tournament.

The 53-year-old, who finshed 18th in The Open at Troon last week, birdied three holes on the front nine and four more after the turn on a blemish-free display that lifted him from 11th overnight to top spot.

England's Paul Broadhurst joins American trio Joe Durant, Tom Byrum and Wes Short Jr in a chasing group on seven under.

Durant had been joint overnight leader but could only manage a level-par 72 on the day.

Japan's Kohki Idoki, the other pace-setter, fared even worse and slipped to a share of 18th after putting together four consecutive bogeys on the back nine.
