Established in 1893, the Workington golf club's course has, and continues, to undergo frequent changes in its layout. Originally designed by James Braid, it began life as a nine-hole course before being closed down around the time of the First World War as membership declined as people went out to join the Front. Thereafter, it moved to its present home and was extended to eighteen holes under the design and supervision of F.G. Hawtree. Currently, efforts are being made to develop the course further and bring it into line with twenty-first century standards and so Howard Swan has been enlisted to help with this rejuvenation.
