Billy Hurley III shot a final-round 69 to claim his first PGA Tour title with a fairytale victory at the Quicken Loans National at Congressional.

The world number 607, only playing on a sponsor's exemption after losing his tour card last year, held his nerve to finish 17 under and win by three shots from Vijay Singh.

The 34-year-old's performance was enough to earn him - after missing the cut in six previous events this season - a place at next month's Open Championship at Troon.

Singh, who rose through the field with a six-under-par 65, will join him in Scotland along with Spain's Jon Rahm, who finished in a tie for third on his professional debut on 13 under. Bill Haas also finished 13 under, one ahead of Ernie Els.

Hurley's decisive move came with two moments of magic on the back nine. He chipped in from well off the green for a birdie at the 15th and followed by holing from 27 foott for another birdie at the next. That gave him a three-shot lead he did not relinquish.

Els threatened but his round was an erratic one and he saw his chances effectively end when he found the water at the 10th and took a double-bogey five. His front nine had been a mixture containing five birdies and three bogeys but further dropped shots at the 13th and 17th saw him card 72 and move in the opposite direction from fast-charging Singh.

The Fijian shot four birdies on his outward nine and three others coming home, dropping just one shot with a bogey at the 17th.

Rahm, 21, who was the only amateur to make the cut in last week's US Open, again impressed, showing maturity with a steady 70.
