New US Open champion Dustin Johnson is best known for blasting drives over 310 yards on a regular basis.

Here Press Association Sport takes a closer look at the new major champion.

GOOD FOUNDATIONS

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Johnson played collegiate golf at Coastal Carolina University. As an amateur he won the Monroe Invitational and the Northeast Amateur in 2007 and played on the winning 2007 Walker Cup and Palmer Cup teams.

CONSISTENCY PAYS OFF

Johnson has won in each of his first nine years on the PGA Tour. While he has only managed to pick up more than one title in a season (two in 2010) during that time he has amassed 34.7million US dollars (£26.8million) in prize money. It puts him 15th on the PGA Tour's all-time career money list.

BIG-HITTING

In the modern game length off the tee is a huge advantage and Johnson has averaged 305 yards-plus every year since joining the tour. Since he became a full member in 2008 he has hit 1,274 drives a combined distance of 395,581 yards - or 224 miles. That is halfway back to his Columbus, South Carolina, birthplace from Oakmont Country Club where he won the US Open. By comparison, and not withstanding advances in technology, 14-time major winner Tiger Woods averaged 300 yards-plus just five seasons in 19 years.

FAMOUS FAMILY CONNECTION

Johnson is engaged to Paulina Gretzky, the daughter of ice hockey great Wayne who has become something of an off-course mentor to the golfer. The pair play casual rounds together and the four-time Stanley Cup winner passes on his experience of succeeding at the top of your sport and how to sustain it - although he draws the line at offering tips on Johnson's game.
