Woods takes control at National

03 Jul 2009 - 22:19:55

Tiger Woods shot a four-under-par 66 to secure a one-shot lead after the second round of the PGA National.

Poised two strokes behind Anthony Kim overnight, the world number one capitalised on a sluggish day for the defending champion.

Woods started on the back nine and made five birdies and a bogey in his round to record the lowest-ever 36-hole score at the Congressional Country Club.

Justin Rose, Martin Laird and Brian Davis were the Britons to make the cut.

Paul Casey and Greg Owen both missed out at four over par and six over par respectively.

After setting a new course record the day before, Kim posted an even-par round as Australia's Rod Pampling came through the pack to establish himself as Woods' closest challenger.

Americans DA Points and Bryce Molder started the day alongside the 14-time Major winner but fell away with par-70 rounds.

Australian Steve Elkington faded in a more dramatic fashion as he moved from fifth to tied 21st after finishing the day three-over. Despite taking possession of the lead, Woods did not feel he managed to replicate his form from the tournament's opening day.

"I didn't drive the ball as well as I did yesterday or hit my irons as crisp," he said. "Either I hit it pretty close to the hole, within 10 feet, or I was missing greens. So it was a little bit of two ends today.

"It was nice to actually get a score out of it. I didn't shoot myself in the foot.

"I had a stretch there from basically 17 through three where I didn't really hit the ball all that well but somehow was able to get through it and keep the momentum of the round going."
