Tiger Woods to play in Malaysia

01 Oct 2012 - 15:17:39

Tiger Woods will lead the field in Malaysia later this month at the CIMB Classic, a PGA Tour co-sanctioned event, with 38 players now confirmed, organisers said Monday.

The 48-player event, now in its third year, will be played at the Mines Resort & Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur on October 25 - 28 with a $6.1 million prize purse according to an organisers' handout.

It will be the first time Woods features in the tournament and the event is a chance for the biggest name in golf to put a disappointing Ryder Cup behind him, where he failed to win a single match as Europe came from behind to snatch victory.

Winners from the 2012 PGA Tour season who are in the field include Nick Watney, Jason Dufner, Carl Pettersson, Scott Piercy, Rickie Fowler, John Huh, Kyle Stanley, Bill Haas, Johnson Wagner and Marc Leishman.

Martin Laird, 2010 champion Ben Crane, Sean O'Hair, Ricky Barnes, Cameron Tringale and 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman all received sponsors' exemptions into this year's field. The other two sponsors' exemptions are Malaysians Danny Chia and Shaaban Hussin.

Asian Tour and Professional Golf Association of Malaysia co-sanction the event in addition to the PGA Tour.
