The Dustbin Lid Man - Welcome to the Race to Dubai building site

19 Nov 2009 - 08:27:08

I've been in clubhouses that are more shed than house, but I've never changed in one where the builders are in the locker room next to yours.

The flagship event on the European tour is being played on a building site. Way to go.

Meanwhile, Hugh Grant has revealed that he can't get a girlfriend because of his obsession with golf. Being engaged I can't relate to that. However I can relate to his comment: "When you say to a girl 'I play golf her eyes glaze over." That happens quite a lot. And not just with girls.

I also relate to his admission of getting up in the middle of the night to practise his swing. While I don't actually get out of bed to do it, I definitely play some lovely imaginary golf during the witching hour.

In fact, I may be very sad in doing this, but after a round of golf I replay all my shots in order. It's a bit like counting sheep, only I'm hitting the sheep's balls.

Golf is an obsession and our Hugh says he watches people's swings in slow-mo on YouTube to try and improve his game. While I may not have the spare time of Hugh Grant, I do share his attitude to the game. I've got a couple of great 'toilet' books about the sport that I enjoy during my private time in the bog.

One is about the legends of the game from James Braid through to Tigger. The other is about technique, which is more suitable for Sunday mornings when there's more time to read a whole chapter on putting.

There must be others like me and Hugh who simply love the game for what it is rather than bloating it with wads of cash. Instead of seeing the cream of the European tour playing a frankly average looking course in the desert because the oily money is there, let's see them play somewhere that's already been built and give half the money to charity.

I'm going to play an imaginary round with Mr Grant tonight and see if we can’t bang the world to rights. I might also give him some tips on girls.
