About
The Open Championship is the oldest of golf’s four majors, dating back to 1860, and the only major held outside of the United States.
Run by the Royal & Ancient Club (R&A), The Open visits its home at St. Andrews on the east coast of Scotland every five years, and will return to the famous Old Course in 2010.
In the years between, the championship rotates between links courses in the British Isles – typically in Scotland and England. It has been held only once in Northern Ireland, but never in Wales.
Since 1873, the winner of The Open has received the Champion Trophy, more commonly known as The Claret Jug, and been referred to as ‘The Champion Golfer of the Year’.
