Rathdowney was founded in 1930 as a nine-hole course and extended to 18 holes in 1997. It is a parkland course of undulating terrain with a refreshing mixture of long and short holes, all of which demand the use of all the clubs in the bag. The club is owned by the members and is developing rapidly into a tough test for golfers of a good ability. The course is set in beautiful rolling parkland in the southwestern corner of County Laois. With the Devil's Bit to the west and the Slieve Blooms to the north, it combines a pleasant rural ambience and serenity with an interesting and rewarding golfing experience.
