Cathal Dervan Chief Sports Writer Irish Daily Star (Sunday) So you want to play one of Ireland’s top 25 courses (2005 Golf Digest Readers’ Survey) on one of the most spectacular courses in the country and only an hour from Dublin? You want to play golf on land described by the country’s leading course designer Christy O’Connor Jnr as the best he has worked with? You want to visit a 36 hole complex rated as potentially the best member’s facility in Ireland and one of the country’s top 10 parkland courses by the world-renowned golfing writer Dermot Gilleece? You want to find out why the club was voted AIB Golf Club of the Year for 2004 by the GUI and the LGUI? If the answer to any or all of the above questions is yes then you want to play Headfort in County Meath, the progressive and welcoming golf club in the north-east of Leinster that is home to not one but two of the finest parkland courses in Ireland. The Christy O’Connor Jnr designed New Course, meandering around the river Blackwater, takes pride of place with 13 of the holes featuring a water challenge on a lay-out with that ‘wow’ factor. Top course designer O’Connor Jnr has built a course at Headfort to test and delight every golfer, from the society member to the European Tour pro, all of whom are afforded the same Cead Mile Failte by Headfort members and staff alike. Most recently the New Course was rated in the top 25 of all Irish courses by the readers of a leading golf publication and many others have paid tribute to O’Connor’s stunning work. The designer himself described it thus: “It is the finest piece of land I have worked with and could host the Irish Open without any trouble. One of the pleasing things for me has been the reaction of Paul McGinley and the other pros to the course. They recognise that it has all the course infrastructure for such an event. Headfort\'s New Course has a lot of key holes but the par 3s are the best in the country.” Resident professional and former Irish PGA captain Brendan McGovern added: “I make no bones about saying it is the best new course in the country. It was a magnificent piece of land to work with and Christy O’Connor Junior has done it justice.” European Tour player Damien McGrane, a Kells native and an Honorary Life Member of the Club, said: “I learnt how to play the game on the wonderful Old Course and I am looking forward to playing in a major championship on the New Course in the future.” Ryder Cup hero Philip Walton rated Headfort New as right up amongst the best parkland courses in Ireland after his victory in the 2003 pro-am but that is not the only reason to sample the Headfort welcome. The Old Course, host venue for one of Ryder Cup vice captain Des Smyth’s earliest professional wins at the 1979 Dunlop Tournament, is equally as impressive and is host to a spectacular collection of both natural and Asiatic trees with greens to die for. Not content to sit on their laurels the members of Headfort have progress high on their agenda. Already their new look website at www.headfortgolfclub.ie has received rave reviews for innovation, clarity and quality. Plans for a major extension to the clubhouse have been approved by the membership and guest events are also planned for the week Ireland plays host to the Ryder Cup this September. Whether you join in the Headfort experience that week or any week one thing is sure – you will be welcomed back. After 18 holes on either of the two Headfort courses you will want to come back.
