Unfinished business for Hansen

Denmark's JB Hansen has some unfinished business to attend to in the rescheduled Madeira Islands Open at Santo da Serra this week.

Hansen held the clubhouse lead after the opening round of the original event back in March, before bad weather forced the tournament to be cancelled.

Winds gusting up to 47 miles per hour meant no play had been possible on Thursday, while further strong winds on Friday caused a delay of almost two hours before rain ended play early.

Heavy rain caused further disruption on Saturday and the decision was taken to make it a 36-hole event, but torrential downpours on Sunday meant no play was possible.

"It's always good to come to a tournament where you know how to play the golf course and this is a big tournament for us on the Challenge Tour so I've got a lot of confidence coming into this week," Hansen said.

"It was so windy in that first round back in March, you were just trying to keep the ball in play. There are so many slopes on the course and the wind is always swirling in many directions so you will always miss shots long or short, right or left.

"When it's that tough you've just got to make a lot of pars and try and give yourself some birdie chances at some point. I think there are a lot of good holes out there. It's not easy to make good golf holes going uphill but they've done a good job with this place."

Portugal's Ricardo Gouveia is the pre-tournament favourite after effectively securing his European Tour card for next season thanks to victory in the Aegean Airlines Challenge earlier this month and six other top-10 finishes this season.

The 23-year-old, who leads the Challenge Tour's Road to Oman Rankings, said: " It's nice coming home to Portugal having played so well recently, I feel the respect from my fellow players.

"The goal has changed for me since I'm technically on the European Tour next year so now I just want to win the Road to Oman Rankings and I'm in a good position to do that. I don't want to rest on past results.

"The goal this week is of course to win. My game is in good shape, I just have to play smart and keep the same mindset as I've been doing for the past few months."
