Scottish quartet Greig Marchbank, Jack McDonald, Craig Ross and Robert MacIntyre were all victorious on the opening day of the first match-play round of the 120th Amateur Championship at Carnoustie.

Marchbank was a 3&2 winner over Ryan Stovash, whose American compatriot was thrashed 6&5 by McDonald, while Ross beat Australia's Cameron Davis 2&1 and MacIntyre edged out DJ Loypur on the last hole.

In blustery conditions at the famous course, others to progress included England's two-time European Amateur champion Ashley Chesters, who came through 3&2 against Australia's Taylor MacDonald.

Chesters said: "It was so windy out there I was just making pars which were good enough to wins holes.

"I putted well and holed a lot of 10 footers which was important at some good times in the match."

Welshman David Boote progressed after beating Ewen Ferguson 2&1 but Sweden's Marcus Kinhult, the highest ranked player in the competition with a world amateur placing of third, was defeated on the last by Norway's Vetle Maroy.

Scotland's Craig Howie and New Zealand's Ryan Chisnall, who were the leaders in the qualifying rounds, both lost.

Howie was beaten 2&1 by Italy's Michele Cea, while Chisnall was defeated in the fourth additional hole by Alejandro Tosti from Argentina.
