Langasque earns Open spot

Frenchman Romain Langasque has won the 120th Amateur Championship at Carnoustie with a 4&2 victory over Grant Forrest.

Forrest celebrated his 22nd birthday by beating Alexandre Daydou on Friday, but the Scot, who recently completed his studies at the University of San Diego, was unable to overcome Langasque in Saturday's 36-hole showdown.

Langasque, 20, headed into the afternoon round with a three-hole advantage over Forrest and the Frenchman extended his lead to move to 5-up through 27 holes.

Forrest, however, made a long putt on the 12th to reduce the margin to four before winning the 14th hole with a birdie.

But Langasque held his nerve with a brilliant tee shot at the par-three 16th to seal the coveted title and earn an automatic spot at next month's Open Championship at St Andrews.

He becomes only the third Frenchman to win the Amateur Championship.
