Spanish debutant Jon Rahm showed his first round was no flash in the pan at Congressional as he kept a share of the lead in the Quicken Loans National.
The 21-year-old, who was the only amateur to make the cut in last week's US Open, followed up his opening 64 with a four-under second round of 67 in Bethesda.
He is now tied for top spot with Billy Hunter III of the United States, who carded 65, on 11 under.
It could have been better for Rahm though after he bogeyed the final hole of his round.
"I couldn't be happier," Rahm told reporters. "(Thursday) was a great round and after a great round usually it's hard to follow it. To play golf the way I did today, I'm really proud of myself."
Hot on the heels of the leading pair are a couple of veterans in the shape of Ernie Els, who won the 1997 US Open at Congressional, and Vijay Singh.
Three-time Major winner Singh is two shots behind after shooting 66 with Els a shot further back alongside Webb Simpson, Bill Haas and Harold Varner III.
"It would be good to win," Singh said. "But it's only halfway, so I'll be focused on my game tomorrow and see what happens."
