Danny Willett unhappy as rain delays cause problems in US Open

Masters champion Danny Willett led the chorus of disapproval after players were not allowed to warm up following the first weather delay on the opening day of the US Open.

Thunderstorms wreaked havoc at Oakmont on Thursday, with half of the 156-man field unable to even start their rounds and only nine players finishing.

Willett was four over par after 12 holes when play was abandoned for the day shortly after 4:30pm local time and was unhappy with how the first 79-minute delay was handled by tournament officials.

"That was a bad one," the world number nine said. "We sat in a cabin for an hour and 10 minutes behind the seventh tee without being given a chance to hit any balls or do anything.

"It's not like you are playing a Sunday medal, you're in a US Open, (but) they don't give you a chance to even hit a few balls.

" Even the second time out, at 1:47 we were told to go back out again at 2:10. By the time you get your stuff ready and get out to the range you never hit any balls.

"You can appreciate they're trying to get as many holes in as possible, but sometimes you just have to call it a day and come back."

Willett, who has been plagued by back problems during his career, had earlier written on Twitter: "Find it odd that we stay in position for an hour, then might have to go straight back out Not great for the old body!!!"

And Austria's Bernd Wiesberger also took to social media to complain, adding: "Thanks @usga for that short notice restart without the option to warm up again after one hour of sitting around. Just wondering if you gonna pull the same stuff again after this thunder has passed.!"
