Danny Willett joins short list of British Masters winners

Danny Willett's epic win at the US Masters made him only the fourth British player to claim the prestigious title. We take a look at how Willett and his predecessors did it.

SANDY LYLE (1988)

Lyle became the first Briton to wear the famous green jacket after a thrilling finish to the 1988 event. His shot from a fairway bunker on the 18th bounced well beyond the hole but rolled back to within six feet. The Scot proceeded to hole the putt for birdie and beat American rival Mark Calcavecchia by one shot. It was Lyle's second and final major win having claimed the Open title three years earlier by one shot from Payne Stewart.

NICK FALDO (1989, 1990, 1996)

Faldo won a play-off with Scott Hoch to follow Lyle as Masters champion in 1989, and the following year became the first player to retain the title in a quarter of a century after winning another play-off against Ray Floyd. Faldo won his third and final Masters title in 1996 when he famously overhauled a six-stroke advantage held by faltering Australian Greg Norman in the final round.

IAN WOOSNAM (1991)

Woosnam became the first and so far only Welsh winner of the Masters in 1991 after winning a three-way battle with Jose Maria Olazabal and two-time winner Tom Watson. Woosnam watched as first Olazabal then Watson found bunkers and scored bogey and double-bogey respectively. Then Woosnam holed a five-foot putt to take the green jacket.

DANNY WILLETT (2016)

The 2016 Masters might be remembered more for the epic collapse suffered by Jordan Spieth, who led by five strokes at the 10th hole. But it was as much about the unerring consistency showed by Willett, whose five-under-par final round score of 67 proved enough for him to take full advantage of the American's travails and pick up his first major title by three clear strokes.
