The Dustbin Lid Man - McIlroy punished for US snub

As you may have gathered if you read last week’s blog, Twitter has continued to be lit up by golfers teasing each other mercilessly.
It has also been used by world number one Lee Westwood to make a justified, yet fairly sensitive point. He used the very public social networking site to deride the PGA Tour’s decision to give the rookie of the year award to Rickie Fowler rather than Rory McIlroy.
The young Brit had that stunning victory at Quail Hollow and also helped win the Ryder Cup in his debut season on tour. Westy made the valid point that it looks suspiciously like the tour getting their own back on the Northern Irishman for his decision to return to Europe next season.
While he didn’t use Twitter, Graeme McDowell has agreed with the world number one saying of his compatriot: "I agree with Lee...Rory is one of the most talented players I’ve ever seen."
It makes a rather spicy end to a fantastic season, what with European Tour winners both at the majors and the rain soaked Ryder Cup. Let’s now hope that the Sports Personality of the Year Award goes to a deserving home in Portrush.
With no disrespect to the other nominees, Graeme McDowell's achievement in winning the US Open ranks with the very finest achievements by a British sportsman. And if you throw the winning putt at the Ryder Cup into the mix, along last weekend’s thrilling victory over Tiger Woods... there can only be one winner surely?
