If you’re looking for the most remote golf course in the whole of the British Isles, then you might just find it on the isle of North Ronaldsay. The most northerly of the Orkney Islands, North Ronaldsay lies approximately four kilometres north of its nearest neighbour Sanday and is only 2.7 square miles in total size. Incredibly, it is closer, as the crow flies, to Oslo – the capital of Norway – than Edinburgh. In spite of its remote setting, however, the golf-mad locals have seen wise enough build a nine-hole course, which is a real treat to play. Rugged and challenging, with superb sea views in every direction, the course is well worth the long journey.
