Thomas Pieters snaps a club on the 11th hole at Royal Troon

Belgium's Thomas Pieters' fit of temper saw him snap a club in half as his frustrations boiled over on the difficult 11th hole at Royal Troon.

The 24-year-old from Antwerp broke the shaft of a short iron over his knee and tossed both halves into a gorse bush after playing his seventh to the par four.

He finished the hole with a nine, which undid all his good work from earlier in the round with three birdies on the front nine briefly getting him to two under par for the tournament.

Pieters dropped a shot at the 10th before imploding at the next.

He is not the first to damage a club after becoming frustrated by the South Ayrshire links as four-time major winner Rory Mcllroy broke a fairway wood on Saturday after throwing it in annoyance at the par-five 16th.
