Nacho Elvira showed his opponents the way in the early stages of the Madeira Islands Open.

The 28-year-old Spaniard was seven under par after 13 holes, one shot ahead of Scotland's Scott Henry.

Seven players, including England's Chris Paisley, were a further shot adrift on five under at Santo da Serra golf club.

Elvira hit seven birdies in a faultless round, including four in a row to set the early pace.

Henry managed an eagle three at the par five 11th but also picked up a bogey on the first as he kept in touch at the right end of the field.

Paisley also bagged an eagle on the 11th and claimed three birdies to be five under after 11 holes in a tight field.

The event had to be rescheduled from March after torrential rain forced it to be cancelled.
