Colin Montgomerie missed the cut at the Senior Open in Carnoustie, where Japan's Kohki Idoki and American Joe Durant took a share of the lead after two rounds.

Montgomerie managed to beat the cut last week in the 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon but was one stroke adrift having finished five over after 36 holes.

The Ryder Cup great has finished third and second in the previous two editions of the tournament but will not be bettering that on this occasion.

Instead Idoki and Durant lead the way on seven-under, shooting rounds of 67 and 68 respectively.

Overnight leader Woody Austin slipped 17 places with a two-over round of 74, leaving a chasing pack of five sitting one shot behind the front-runners.

That consisted of Americans Tom Byrum and Olin Browne, Swede Jesper Parnevik, Australian Peter Fowler and Carlos Franco of Paraguay.

Jean van der Velde, making his Senior Open bow at the course where he had his famous 18th hole meltdown in the 1999 Open, also missed the cut.
